The United States is still the world’s largest natural gas producer, despite a marginal 2017 output increase of 0.7 percent, a new report from Eni has revealed.
The world’s top five natural gas producers and their 2017 natural gas production, as highlighted in Eni’s report, can be seen below:
- United States – 26.6 trillion cubic feet (753.51 billion cubic meters)
- Russia – 24.4 Tcf (691.94 Bcm)
- Iran – 7.6 Tcf (215.75 Bcm)
- Canada – 6.5 Tcf (184.44 Bcm)
- Qatar – 6.3 Tcf (179.47 Bcm)
In 2016, the United States was the largest producer of natural gas with an output of 26.4 Tcf (748.39 Bcm), the report shows. Back in 2010, Russia was the largest producer of natural gas with an output of 22.7 Tcf (644.41 Bcm), according to Eni’s report.
The report also shows that, among the top 10 natural gas producers in 2017, Australia recorded the largest year on year output rise with a 21.1 percent increase. Russia recorded the second highest production rise with an increase of 7.7 percent and Iran recorded the third largest rise with an increase of seven percent.
“Gas demand has been strong in 2017 (+3.3 percent), well above the average growth rates of the last decade. Consumption grew in all the regions, especially in Asia-Pacific and China where Battle for Blue Skies policies supported coal-to-gas switch. Europe kept growing for the third year in a row with a robust +4.9 percent,” Eni CEO and General Manager Claudio Descalzi stated in the foreword of the report.
“Australian production, thanks to LNG contributions, recorded a tremendous increase (+21 percent) while United States is still the world’s largest natural gas producer even if its 2017 production increase was marginal (+0.7 percent),” he added.
